柴油发电机组运转时，一方面会将部分清新空气吸入燃烧室，使其与燃油均匀混合于燃烧室燃烧作功，驱动整台柴油发电机组持续运转；同时，柴油发电机组运转时所产生的大量热量必须及时散发出机房，这就会消耗大量的清凉空气。因此，标准柴油发电机组除自身必须具有良好的循环水冷却或油冷却结构外，机房的冷却和通风系统同样是十分重要而必不可少的，必须保证有足够的空气流过机房，以补充消耗于发动机燃烧用的空气以及将柴油发电机组运行时所散发出的大量热量通过散热器芯排出机房外，使机房内温度尽可能接近环境温度及保持柴油发电机体温度于正常工作范围。

It is necessary to ensure that there is enough air flowing through the engine room to supplement the consumption and discharge the heat of the generator through the radiator, so keep the temperature in the engine room is as close to the ambient temperature as possible and keep the generator temperature within the normal operating range.

 当机房条件达不到规定的进排风口净面积要求时，必须考虑采用强制进排风的方式，以确保柴油发电机组正常燃烧和冷却的需要。

     在建筑物中，通风口通常配有百叶窗和金属防护网帘，当计算进风口的尺寸时，必须考虑百叶窗片和金属网帘等所占有的无效面积。在冬季，柴油发电机组用于备用运行状态时，柴油发电机组只是偶尔运转，大多数时间都是处于备用停机状态。此时机房内应时刻保持适当的温度，以避免影响柴油发电机组的正常启动能力或使冷却水结冰，致柴油发电机组损坏。这就要求机房所有的通风口都必须是可以调节的，以便机组停用时能予自动或人工关闭。同时建议柴油发电机组加装配套水套加热器，并使其始终保持正常的工作状态。
